Stainless steel and its properties
The main component of stainless steel is iron. Stainless steel also contains chromium (minimum 11%) and nickel. When these alloys are combined with iron, it increases the resistance of stainless steel to corrosion and wear. Chromium also imparts heat resistance to stainless steel, which makes it useful in things like exhaust manifolds.
