Professionals must know the difference between 18-8 and 304 and 316 grades of stainless steel. We will help you simplify it. Here's what you need to know about the three different grades:

18-8 grade stainless steel
This refers to the percentage of chromium and nickel in the 300 series stainless steel. This means that grade 18-8 fasteners have 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Type 18-8 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance than the 400 series. It can only be hardened by cold work and is not magnetic.
Advantages and disadvantages of grade 18-8 stainless steel
As mentioned earlier, grade 18-8 stainless steel is known for its excellent corrosion resistance. However, it is known to show signs of corrosion when exposed to chlorides such as salts. Therefore, it is not an ideal stainless steel for marine applications. On the plus side, the properties of grade 18-8 stainless steel include that it can be bent and molded without compromising its overall strength and durability. Not only is this stainless steel very budget-friendly, it requires little maintenance. The yield strength of 18-8 stainless steel is also impressive.
Application of Grade 18-8 Stainless Steel
Grade 18-8 stainless steel is used in many different industries, including wastewater treatment, catering, medical, and transportation. It is not suitable for marine applications.

304 stainless steel
This is a basic alloy. It is not heat-hardenable and non-magnetic. While this grade of stainless steel will not rust, it will tarnish. It is also highly resistant to the effects of various chemicals and acids.
Advantages and disadvantages of 304 stainless steel
The main advantage is that 304 stainless steel is generally considered to be one of the strongest mild steels on the market. It has considerable corrosion resistance and is easier to form than its 316 stainless steel alternative. However, like grade 18-8 stainless steel, it is susceptible to corrosion when exposed to salt water.
Application of 304 stainless steel
304 stainless steel is commonly used in the manufacture of various items, including sinks, pots, pans, tables, and more. Therefore, 304 stainless steel is often used in the dairy, food and brewing industries.

316 stainless steel
This product has high tensile strength. It is corrosion resistant and can withstand harsh environments. It is also non-magnetic and must be hardened by cold work. The difference between Type 304 and Type 316 stainless steel is the molybdenum content up to 3%. This grade of stainless steel is commonly used in the surgical industry, the pulp industry, and the production of dyes and chemicals.
Advantages and disadvantages of 316 stainless steel
316 stainless steel has higher strength and durability than 304 stainless steel. It also has a higher level of corrosion resistance, including when exposed to salt water. It has good pitting resistance and is also resistant to aggressive chemicals. However, as mentioned above, 316 stainless steel is less ductile than 304 stainless steel. It's also more expensive.
Application of 316 stainless steel
Due to its higher level of corrosion resistance, especially in salt water, it is no surprise that 316 stainless steel is most commonly used in marine applications, such as marine boat cross bollard. It is also commonly used in the manufacture of chemical processing equipment, as well as various heat exchangers and furnace parts.
